Going on a mountain lion hunt! With Logan Anderson of Seven Anchor Outfitter, LLC.
In March of 2019 I had the privilege of going on a mountain lion hunt with Logan Anderson, who, along with his wife Josie, own Seven Anchor Outfitters, LLC.
A little background information – I wanted to harvest a mountain lion to complete my “Super 10 of North American Big Game”. My wife and I are from Wyoming but, as retirees, we “pickleball” (which is somewhat similar to tennis) to hopefully keep this old body in “huntin’ shape” (I’ll be 80 this year). I played pickleball and became friends with an individual that had just retired from an interesting and unique career. He had spent 40 year training lion hunting dogs for clients from all over the west. Who better to ask for a recommendation on a lion hunting outfitter/guide? My friend unhesitently, strongly recommended Logan Anderson of Seven Anchor Outfitters. I promptly called Logan and he politely informed me he was booked solid for the rest of the winter.
Aw shucks! However, he did say to “keep bugging him” in case something opened up or one of his clients filled out early. So–I kept buggin him and lo and behold an opening came up in March. Logan’s operation was flexible enough that I would stay in our Arizona winter abode, travel several miles to his lion hunting area, meet him and his entourage at 4:30 am or thereabouts and we were off on a lion hunt!
Enough background. Logan showed up on schedule every morning with the horses saddled in the 5th wheel trailer, 10-11 lion hounds in kennels in the back of his flatbed crew cab 4×4 and we were off. Logan knows his area very well and has remarkable rapport with the ranchers/land owners in the area. His equipment is first class and well maintained. His lion hounds are well cared for, very well trained, and do amazingly well at the task of finding and trailing mountain lions in the dry upper Sonoran desert (no snow). I hadn’t been on a horse in almost 30 years and was glad to see that his horses were well trained and readily adapted to the steep rocky canyon country we were hunting in. If you hunt with Logan you will remember breathtaking horseback rides up and down the steep canyons. What memories!
Logan knows his stuff! He knows lions and has the knack of making his clients a fun part of the hunt. The foothill country he hunts is very scenic and a camera should be required equipment. Logan, Thanks for the privilege of hunting with you and your group and bagging a nice lion in the process.
Happy and Happy Trails.
